Reading List

Reading is high on my priority list. Right now, I am reading some productivity books. I don’t usually go for “self-help” type books. However, these productivity ones are exceptional books that have something to say! If they are life-changing in a good way, then I will recommend them. And these meet that criteria.

See these books and then my more extensive list that I read on www.Books24x7.com -- a very cool benefit provided by my employer through a company called www.skillsoft.com. You can choose from thousands of books to read online and also take computer courses online. You create your own folders on your electronic bookshelf and then add books to them to keep it all organized with your favorites. This would cost a few hundred dollars per year if you buy the service. A great way to exercise the mind.

Currently Reading:

Note: I am reading some/listening to others (on the GPS during my commute)

I enjoyed the biography of Nancy Cartwright, as she told her rise to fame as a voice-over artist and the voice of Bart Simson. Very entertaining when she occasionally slips into that voice to make a point. She also gives a good overview of the entire process of bringing an animation to the screen.

The John Adams book was absolutely splendid. So much detail that it brought that era of history totally to life. As I pondered on his magnificent accomplishments in the founding of this nation, I was totally puzzled that there is no monument to him on the Mall. Perhaps now that Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough has brought his life to the forefront of historical biographies, the movement to honor Adams will gain momentum.

  • Live Learn Lead to Make a Difference, by Don Soderquist
    • subtitle: Influencing Others Through Ethics & Integrity
    • This book is written by a man who was an executive with Wal-Mart for over 20 years. It is an excellent book on living your life with purpose from a very positive Christian perspective.

I like books that have the potential to change the way you live. This book could...

  • The Unwritten Laws of Business, by W.J.King
    • An excellent book of common sense in dealing with life in the business world. Updated from the 1944 classic that inspired Raytheon’s CEO to publish a booklet in 2005 of the same name.

  • Getting Things Done, The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, by David Allen
    • A life-changing book on productivity, managing workflow, how to organize your to do lists!
    • What makes this book unique is that he explains how the brain cannot hold all the stuff that worries us, and how to get it out into a trusted system so you can stop worrying, think clearly and creatively without all that stress -- and refine the actions (next step) on each item.

Whoa! Let me try this out and see if it works for me in the coming year. Maybe it can replace my system of a billion Post-It™ notes (each with a series of checkboxes on them!)

  • The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, A Memoir, by Bill Bryson
    Broadway Books © 2006, 268 pages

    • White by Ted Dekker
      WestBow Press © 2004, 400 pages

A virus threatens to end the human race. The main character shifts between worlds. What he learns elsewhere not only impacts Earth, but provides unique insights into the universal conflict between good and evil. An intriguing read.
